On the morning of February 25, 2019 a documentary film crew lead by Severin’s David Gregory, came out to meet up with Tom Savini, Michael Gornick, Taso Stavrakis, and Tom Dubensky to film them as they give a tour of the Monroeville Mall which was the major filming location of George Romero's DAWN OF THE DEAD. I was on hand to lend my advice and knowledge on the mall and it's use as a filming location in DAWN OF THE DEAD, if the guys needed any help remembering where things took place or to even point out things that they should talk about. They honestly didn't need much help. I took many pictures on this day and here are a few choice ones from the end of the filming that day. The footage that was filmed there ended up being edited together by Red Shirt Pictures' Michael Felsher and named MEMORIES OF MONROEVILLE: REVISITING THE 'DAWN OF THE DEAD' MALL. It has been included as a special feature on all the recent boxed set Blu-Ray and 4K UHD Blu-Ray versions of DAWN OF THE DEAD produced by the company Second Sight in 2020 and 2021.
Here's what happened. Near the end of the tour, Mike Gornick went inside of the Zombieburgh Lazer Tag Adventure Game store, and he started acting like one of the zombies trying to enter the mall in the movie, clawing at the glass. In seconds, the other guys joined in with him, and then madness ensued. The guys really got into being zombies and it became a great ending to the tour. You can see some of the video footage of the guys acting like zombies in the documentary near it's end. It was great day and super fun to be a part of this special event.
Great stuff thank you
