Today's post features a great one of my shot re-creation and comparisons of the bikers and zombies congregating outside the mall near the end of DAWN OF THE DEAD. The original shot above comes from the Full Frame Argento European cut of DAWN OF THE DEAD. It came out in 2016 in Italy from Midnight Factory and Koch Media, on a set with all three of the official released versions of DAWN OF THE DEAD. This set featured a full restoration of Argento’s European version of the film as its centerpiece. It’s a beautiful restoration actually. The set also included this unique full frame version which was simply a scan of the original elements. The movie was captured in full frame size on film with the intention of having it matted during exhibition and on home video. So this full frame version is essentially a raw view of the elements. It’s pretty cool, you get a lot more picture to see, sometimes though you can see things that you aren’t meant to see, like a boom operator, or the boom itself in many shots. You can even see some of the crew in certain shots. It’s very interesting. This shot above is seen in Argento’s European version of the film, but not in the standard US version. I thought that it’s a great shot to use for the purposes of recreation and comparison.
The spot where this is, in the Monroeville Mall, is on the lower level, back entrance, beside Macy's. Fans call it the Biker Entrance, in the movie they called it the loading dock. No
matter what you want to call it, it still exists at the mall and looks very much the way that you see it in the movie. It’s a fan favorite part of the mall. Everyone who goes to the mall should visit this entrance, it’s a must.
Each day this month I will be showing you something cool, rare, or even noteworthy concerning DAWN OF THE DEAD as a Christmas Present to the fans from me. I hope that you are enjoying this holiday look at DAWN OF THE DEAD.
